  Halloween Hobo Code

This is cool. And what a good idea it is!

My code will be either:

(no one home)

Kids Halloween Candy Code

Growing up in the Bowling Green neighborhood of Sacramento, I was taught how to read and mark houses with the Halloween Candy Code. For kids with an early curfew these codes were invaluable. Once we tagged a house, our peers could use our marks to reap the best full-size chocolate bars while avoiding Chex mix and dried apricots.

Topless Robot - The 10 Greatest Superheroes to Get Drunk With

7) Wolverine

There are three things you need to know about drinking with Logan. One, sometimes he can get drunk, and sometimes he canâ..tâ..depends on whoâ..s writing his healing factor that day. Two, heâ..ll drink any beer until heâ..s good and drunk, at which point only Labatt 50 will do. And three, when he starts talking about â..missing the stubbies,â. donâ..t worryâ..heâ..s still talking about beer. (Oh, and one more thingâ..if he starts singing "O Canada," youâ..d better join in.)

  Zombie Pinup Calendar

This is perhaps the coolest zombie-themed thing ever.

Zombie Calendar in time for Halloween - 10/16/2008

I saw the entire British series, and it was very cool, so I'm very skeptical about them doing an American version of this show. Most American versions of British shows are bad.

Except, they've got Harvey Keitel and Michael Imperioli from "The Sopranos" signed up. That changes things.

ABC's 'Life on Mars': New York cop fights crime from a time warp | Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Arts & Entertainment

This show, premiering Thursday, is also another Americanized remake of a British series. But the results promise a fresh and innovative experience, and it's hard to think of two more improbable descriptions for a show about a bunch of New York City cops.

Somebody asks Cecil about zombies and he doesn't yell at them. Interesting.

The Straight Dope: How would the U.S. military fight a zombie army?

The living dead have no fear of fire, which makes it a great weapon. Zombies engulfed in flames will not only not put themselves out, they'll continue to wander around, possibly setting other zombies alight. Electricity will paralyze zombies but usually not kill them outright unless it also sets them on fire and so isn't advisable as a first line of defense. You might think that nuclear weapons would be a good possibility if a city were 100 percent infected, but the downside is that any surviving zombies will be not only shambling horrors but radioactive too.

Interesting closure to the classic but cancelled series of my youth.

From Wikipedia:

Filmed August 29, 1999 "Message From Moonbase Alpha" was first shown at Space: 1999 Breakway Convention in Los Angeles, California on September 13, 1999 -- the day the events in episode 1 of the series were supposed to take place. "Message From Moonbase Alpha" is on the "SPACE: 1999 Bonus Disk" which is available in the US, Canada. "Message From Moonbase Alpha" is also available on a DVD bonus disc in France and in Italy. It is also on the UFO Space:1999 documentaries DVD produced by Fanderson.

The seven minute clip features only Zienia Merton reprising her role as Sandra Benes delivering a final message to Earth as the only crew member left while a massive exodus to a habitable planet takes place with the rest of the crew. This basically gave the series the finality it never had in its initial run.

  I like Maurice Sendak

Even though he hates many things. It's difficult to imaging a children's author with so much hatred, which is why there may yet be hope for me as a children's author.

â..I hate people,â. he said at one point, extolling the superior company of dogs, like his sweet-tempered German shepherd, Herman (after Melville).

He is, at heart, a curmudgeon, but a delightful one, with a vast range of knowledge, a wicked sense of humor and a talent for storytelling and mimicry.

And he hates a lot of things:

His hatreds are fierce and grand, as if produced by Cecil B. DeMille. He hates his uncle (who made a cruel comment about him when he was a boy); he hates anything to do with God or religion, and Judaism in particular (â..We were the â..chosen people,â.. chosen to be killed?â.)

Think Progress - Global warming deniers forced to cancel meeting due to Tropical Storm Fay.

This week, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) planned to have town hall meetings in Ft. Myers and West Palm Beach, FL. As the Wonk Roomâ..s Brad Johnson notes, â..AFP is a front group for the right-wing pollution company Koch Industries, with an agenda of attacking â warming alarmismâ.. and promoting increased offshore drilling.â. In an ironic twist, AFP has canceled its meetings because of Tropical Storm Fay.

The Associated Press: Documents: Julia Child part of WWII-era spy ring

Famed chef Julia Child shared a secret with Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg and Chicago White Sox catcher Moe Berg at a time when the Nazis threatened the world.

They served in an international spy ring managed by the Office of Strategic Services, an early version of the CIA created in World War II by President Franklin Roosevelt.

The full secret comes out Thursday, all of the names and previously classified files identifying nearly 24,000 spies who formed the first centralized intelligence effort by the United States.
