  Sorry Everybody

Some of us -- hopefully most of us -- are trying to understand and appreciate the effect our recent election will have on you, the citizens of the rest of the world. As our so-called leaders redouble their efforts to screw you over, please remember that some of us -- hopefully most of us -- are truly, truly sorry. And we'll say we're sorry, even on the behalf of the ones who aren't.

Sorry Everybody

The number of U.S. citizens visiting Canada's main immigration Web site has shot up six-fold as Americans flirt with the idea of abandoning their homeland after President George W. Bush's election win this week.

"When we looked at the first day after the election, November 3, our Web site hit a new high, almost double the previous record high," immigration ministry spokeswoman Maria Iadinardi said on Friday.

On an average day some 20,000 people in the United States log onto the Web site, www.cic.gc.ca -- a figure which rocketed to 115,016 on Wednesday. The number of U.S. visits settled down to 65,803 on Thursday, still well above the norm.

Bush's victory sparked speculation that disconsolate Democrats and others might decide to start a new life in Canada, a land that tilts more to the left than the United States.

Thousands of disappointed Democrats face the prospect of four more years under the leadership of U.S. President George Bush. But it's not like they don't have options.

The satirical Canadian website www.marryanamerican.ca has been visited by 14,000 people since Monday.

On the front page, it quips that legions of Canadians have "already pledged to sacrifice their singlehood to save our southern neighbours from ... cowboy conservatism."

Be the spookin-est kid on the block with these cool ideas. For me it's a toss up between Florida's Electronic Touch-Screen Voting Machines or Jenna Bush's Liver.

Interesting right-wing Texan's take on cheesy Sci-fi television shows. Man, he really pisses all over Firefly. I mean sure, it may have ripped off Starhunter, Cowboy Bebop, and most of all, Outlaw Star, but hey....

More than 10 million Canadians have tried cannabis at least once in their life, and that number keeps growing, according to the latest drug use survey conducted by Statistics Canada.

Based on data from the Canadian Community Health Survey conducted in 2002, Statscan estimates three million of those used some form of marijuana or hashish that year.

"Nearly half of those who had used cannabis in the previous year had done so less than once a month. About 10 per cent reported they had used it on a weekly basis, and another 10 per cent said they used it daily," the agency said in a statement.

Those numbers were up considerably from the agency's last usage survey. Whereas 12 per cent of Canadians used marijuan in 2002, only 7.4 per cent did so in 1994.

  Skater Mama!

Say "skateboarding," and most people think of underachieving, preadolescent boys personified by television's cartoon slacker Bart Simpson. Say "mum," and skateboarding is probably the last thing to come to most people's minds.

  Red vs Blue

Cool comedy "show" based on characters from HALO:

Q: No seriously. What the hell?

A: Oh. We just write scripts and then use videogames to act them out. It's a new style of animation that some people call machinima. It allows to make 4-5 minutes of animation with a small group of people.

  Neat Ancient History site

Livius is a non-commercial website on ancient history. Since 1996, it has been maintained by Jona Lendering from Amsterdam, Holland. He read history at Leiden University (where he graduated in 1993), specialized in Mediterranean culture at the Amsterdam Free University (until 1996), and worked at excavations in Holland (a Roman villa) and Greece (hellenistic Halos). After teaching methodology and theory at the Free University, he worked for some time as an archivist for the Dutch government. He is currently teaching ancient and Dutch history at the Free University.

  Jack Fry - PI

Check this out. A cigar ad, thinly disguised as a hard-boiled PI story:

'... I was in possession of a quick smoke, a mild, creamy Ashton Corona and was about to go try my luck when my senses got the better of me. Smoking a stogie in the airplane restroom doesn't exactly get you into the "Mile High Club."'

  Millenium coming on DVD

Peter Staddon, SVP of marketing at 20th Century Fox, was kind enough to spend time last night at a live online chat, sponsored and hosted by the super staff over at The Home Theater Forum. He was asked a LOT of TV-on-DVD related questions, and tonight I hope to bring you the complete wrap-up.

Mr. Staddon was asked a couple of times about Millennium, and DVD releases for it. Staddon's replies were very positive, and made it clear in no uncertain terms that he is a fan of this show. Millennium has come up at these chats in the past, and each time Staddon indicated his desire to get it released. During this chat, though, it was explained that Fox was wanting to get finished with The X-Files DVD releases first, and also allow time for TV DVD to really take off so that a Millennium release will be better supported by consumers. He also mentioned that he had to "push this through some sceptical (sic) people in the office", and so he really hopes it sells.

So yes, indeedy...Millennium "will be out on DVD this year", in Staddon's own words. GREAT news, indeed. We'll let you know all about it, just as soon as an official announcement is made (probably a few months after X-Files - Season 9 is addressed, which should be soon, as that release is Spring 2004). Stay tuned!

The art gallery business is first of all a business, art is to the art dealer as groceries are to the grocer. Art is the product sold and the dealers goal is to make a profit. The dealers job is to manipulate the media, curators and collectors to achieve that goal. The greater the skill at this manipulation, the greater the ability to make a profit. An artists life is the antithesis of this. The artists life is about self expression, beauty, psychological exploration, the enhancement of the human experience. To live as an artist requires self sacrifice, thus the being of the artist is in conflict with the dealers materialist, profit seeking mentality. This is important to bear in mind.

  Top 10 Advertising Icons

Some of the best-loved ad images of the 20th century have names like Tony, Betty and Ronald. Others, like the Marlboro Man, may not be as beloved, but grew to have tremendous worldwide impact as an instant identifier of Philip Morris Co.'s Marlboro cigarettes.

From frozen vegetables to packaged cake mix, from fast food to automobile tires, these carefully drawn characters are the personifications of businesses that began small but grew to become dominant brands in their fields -- thanks in large part to their famous icons.

(Interesting to note that the Michelin Man originally held a glass of beer: "...lifting a beer glass and shouting, 'Nunc est bibendum! (Now is the time to drink!)' seemed to embody Michelin's slogan at the time, 'Michelin tires swallow up all obstacles.'")
